Dairy Products And Vegans

Dairy Products And Vegans

As with most dietary questions, vegans are split on the issue of dairy products–not so much on the question of whether or not they are acceptable, but instead for what reasons they should not be consumed.

All vegans (or at least true vegans) abstain from consuming dairy products. Some do so for nutritional reasons; others abstain for ethical reasons.

Those who do it for nutritional reasons cite a range of health problems related to the consumption of dairy products, including high cholesterol. Many also have a problem digesting lactose or have a blood-iron or diabetic problem related to milk protein, casein. In addition to this, milk and cheese often contain small portions of undesirable hormones that are added to dairy cow feeds to increase production.

Those who abstain from consuming dairy products for ethical reasons also have a range of reasons for doing so.

Some cite the poor treatment of dairy cows as a main reason for not consuming milk and cheese. They note that dairy cows are forced to become pregnant once each year to maintain a constantly high yield of milk. They are also fed numerous steroids to increase production.

Others who abstain for ethical reasons often cite the maltreatment of dairy cow offspring. They note that calves are not allowed to spend time with or suckle from the mother, but instead are prematurely removed to be reared for either veal production, beef production, or as replacement dairy cows.

The calves selected for “veal” production are often forced to live in crates so tiny that they cannot turn around. They must face in one direction; they cannot groom themeselves; and they are fed hormone-laden feed until they are sent off to be slaughtered.

If you are a prospective vegan, you may want to take some time now to think about what is best for you. Ask yourself whether you wanted to become a vegan for ethical reasons, dietary reasons, or both. And from there, determine whether or not these arguments were strong enough to compel you to do so. Either way, you should emerge with a stronger viewpoint and a better understanding of what you do and do not want.

Help answer the question about dairy cow

What makes a dairy cow different from other cows?
All mother cows have milk for their babies. So, why is it that we drink the milk from dairy cows (the black and white ones) and not other breeds of cows?

THere is a better parlor than this. I forgot the address of that video. The entire steel folds on the roof after the milking is done. The entire area is free for the cows to roam about. At least that is what I think the area is for since there is nothing until it is brought down. I think it was in Denmark

I respect your choice to eat only from Abigail's milk. Really, it took effort to find such a farm. I commend you.

I still don't agree with the ownership of animals, though. Animals were created not for ownership, but to live their own lives with their own kind.

I personally wouldn't consume dairy even from a farm like this, because dairy is unhealthy all around, and I'm way too fat for it anyway, lol.

If you'd like, go to http://www.chreese.com and you can find gluten-free pasta and gluten-free "chreese" sauces. They do not contain soy. It tastes so much like the real thing, so yummy! Pssst: I sprinkle lemon juice into the chreese for more of that cheezy zing. Mmm!

No, I wouldn't, and no, if someone did, they would not be a vegan.

I don't think it's natural to consume the milk of a cow. Would you suck an udder?

In response to an answer below: vegan most certainly does NOT mean raw. It means not consuming or using products made from animals. Milk is not vegan, no matter the treatment of the animal.

  6. mahafakir says:

THe dairy people r wasting so much money dipping the teats in some shit for no reason. They do not touch the udder at all. Pressing the udders is a must. The udders must be pressed hard. to start the contraction and expansion of the udder tissue which starts the releasing of the milk. Also the cows should be lead to a second milking parlor in serial from the first milk parlor to reduce the milk retention in the udder. Also the cows should be milked four times daily instead of twice daily.

because once an animal can no longer reproduce, make eggs, or create milk, the animal is slaughtered.theres nothing wrong with the cow after its unable to make milk, but they make more money but murdering it. and most of the time its not natural. they give animals hormones to produce more. birds are starved, because in there last few days of life, when their body is shutting down, the bird lays eggs. so they starve chickens so they will lay eggs. i hope ive enlightend you. :D

  8. mahafakir says:

The farmers r mis informed. The dip does not prevent mastitis. The mastitis is prevented only by keeping the udders free of milk by milking them more often than twice daily. They should be milked at least thrice and preferably four times. The exact number of times should be determined by hand examining the udders between the milkings. . Unless u hand examine the udders u do not know if the udders were emptied by first milking. Also the milk out put can be doubled ny more frequent milkings.

u will get lots bugs in goats milk cause all they eat are leaves, They love leaves. Cows eat grass. But grass also is going to have bugs. You’ll drink digested bugs if you drink raw milk. But I drink raw milk only if I milk the cow or goat in my mouth. If I don’t have access to a cow I drink Soy milk and eat soy products. That is y Oakstorm says I/m a vegan. But we make lots of sweets with cows milk. They r not so delicious if u make with soy milk. Any way there r no sweets with soy milk.

  11. fakir0005 says:

u r too cruel. Meat causes the the prostates of meat eaters to rot. U’d have difficulty peeing, u will have trouble having sex with young girls like oakstorm and so many things would happen to you. Most University has lectures on Prostate cancer. But your prostate does not have to have cancer for yo to say I wish I was not eating meat. But Peta does not want you to drink milk either.

  12. fakename says:

Vegetarians won't eat any meat but vegans won't eat any product or byproduct of an animal. They are missing out on soooo much.

Good job! Viva or Peta would cringe to see how well done this video is!

Sorry, but I've never really seen much vegan food in Wal-Mart. But always check for soymilk, you're likely to find that! And read the ingredients in cookie packages and such. Often the cheaper knock-off brands won't have animal ingredients in it.

If you can get to a regular grocery store instead of a Wal-Mart, you can look for products by the brands Boca (in a red box) and Morning Star (in a green box). It might be at Wal-Mart, too, but I've never seen it at my Wal-Mart. Just be careful to read the ingredients because some of it isn't vegan!

Just in case you need a list of animal products to watch out for, here's a website with an A-Z list: http://www.happycow.net/health-animal-ingredients.html.

Good luck, and I'm glad your vegan! More power to us!! lol. :)

Because vegans, for whatever personal reasons, have chosen to not consume them. The reasons can be health-related or ethical.

  18. jaime b says:

because the calf who that milk belongs to got turned into veal. The cow was only impregnated for milk and not to feed it baby.

In this way vegans do not wish to finacially support the veal industry.
